WQXR radio host Terrance McKnight introduces the world premiere recording of an oratorio by composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell. It’s a deeply moving tribute to the men and women of the Underground Railroad and to one heroic man in particular, railroad conductor William Still (1821-1902), a chronicler of the inspiring stories of its ‘passengers’, enslaved African-Americans, and their valiant flights north from bondage to freedom. Context is given by several interviews with those involved in the recording. Sanctuary Road is the latest release in Naxos’ highly lauded American Classics series and features music director Kent Tritle leading his Oratorio Society of New York Orchestra and Chorus, and five splendid soloists: soprano Laquita Mitchell, mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, tenor Joshua Blue, baritone Malcolm J. Merriweather and bass-baritone Dashon Burton.
