Podcast: Beethoven Symphony No. 9, arranged by Franz Liszt

Pianist Franz Liszt agonized over his transcription of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony - he loved the music of Beethoven and wanted to get it just right.
In the end, his transcription for two pianos is absolutely brilliant.
It’s not a substitute for the symphony, but still a great way to listen to this symphony.

Thank you for introducing this album on your podcast. It’s wonderful and I hope that you will introduce other Litstz piano transcriptions from the Naxos catalog in the future.
Your podcast is one of my favorites and like to listen to it while taking morning walks in suburban Tokyo.

Dear Robert, Thanks for your email, and for listening to our podcasts. At some point, I will certainly look at some other Liszt transcriptions - they are very good, aren’t they?

At first, I thought I would not like this because I so love Beethoven’s 9th. I have 15 different recordings. But as I listened to this transcription I heard different inner voices, much like different conductors emphasize lines differently. The narrow range of timber reminded me of a black and white photo or movie versus a color. There can be greater beauty and different meaning in the black and white. And surprisingly, I did not miss the voices in the last movement as much as I thought I would. My mind filled in the words, since by now I know them by heart. I got the same intense emotional reaction I always do to this masterpiece. The hope, exultation, and the sense of all of us belonging to the brotherhood of humankind was all there. Well done Franz. Thanks to Naxos for making these available. I hope Naxos records more of these piano transcriptions.
