MusicGiants–which offers high-quality, WMA-format lossless downloads–is now selling the Naxos catalogue . The online music store will also carry PentaTone, the Dutch-based label distributed by Naxos of America that releases the majority of its recordings as SACDs, as part of its collection of so-called Super HD downloads in 5.1 (”surround”) sound. Both Naxos and PentaTone will be available DRM-free.
Earlier this year, Naxos opened its own download store, Classicsonline, which sells DRM-free MP3 tracks from Naxos and a number of distributed labels, including PentaTone. Since offering its entire catalogue on eMusic in 2005, Naxos has become one of that site’s best-selling labels.
The aggressive approach to distributing its music in digital form is part of a broader strategy on the part of Naxos–which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2007–to fully develop into a music-based multi-media company. In addition to Classicsonline, Naxos offers a host of online streaming services geared towards the educational market, including Naxos Music Library, Naxos Spoken Word Library, and Naxos Music Library Jazz. Naxos AudioBooks are available as downloads through its own site and Audible.com.
Naxos has also been producing a growing line of educational products and has even expanded into book publishing. Naxos books, published in the United States by Sourcebooks, come with accompanying CDs or web sites that present musical examples for the reader.
