Earlier this month, my entry on the classical music success that WETA has enjoyed in Washington elicited a couple of responses, including one that criticized the station for avoiding contemporary classical music. Instead of continuing that critique, I thought I’d instead mention a few stations that feature new music.
Here in New York, WNYC airs “New Sounds” with John Schaefer weekdays at 11 pm. Schaefer’s programming is incredibly eclectic and includes world music, jazz, pop, and concert styles.
David Gilliam highlights the music of living composers on “Brave New World” on Louisville’s WUOL 90.5, Mondays at 8 pm. On his last show, Gilliam played music by Lowell Liebermann, Peter Lieberson, and Richard Danielpour. WUOL also airs “100 Years of Solitude” with Alan Brandt, focusing on music of the last century.
In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, John Clare at WITF interviews composers on “Composing Thoughts,” Sunday at 6 pm. John also writes a blog to accompany the show.
Of course, this list is by no means exhaustive or complete: I simply wanted to mention a few shows I’ve come across over the last couple of weeks. I’d be happy to know of other radio stations and programs that play contemporary classical music.
